White Shirt, Maxi Skirt

I’ve got an engagement party this weekend, and I don’t have a solid outfit. I’m a planner when it comes to what I’ll wear to events. When I can’t fall asleep I think about what I’ll wear the next day. I get excited if I know I have a particularly flattering or on trend outfit coming up. But for the life of me, I have not been able to work out what to wear to this engagement party.

Full disclosure: a couple of weeks ago, in an exam induced haze of madness, I purchased three dresses from The Iconic, thinking that at least one of them would be suitable. One was a deep maroon fluted hem shift, with navy detail. The next was a FindersKeepers flared drop waist, in navy with my favourite Blake Lively style neckline. The final dress, and the one all my hopes were pinned on, was a three quarter sleeved, floral number with a wrap around skirt. The dresses arrived, and none was suitable. The burgundy? Too big. The navy FinderKeepers number? Too small. The floral favourite? Oh it fit all right Рlike a glove. But the wrap skirt also came with a split that was a too high for said occasion.

In all honesty, I’ll probably keep the floral, both because I like it and I own nothing like it – I don’t really do patterns other than stripes and leopard. But the others? They’re going back in the post. Which leaves me with the dilemma of finding a suitable outfit sometime before Saturday. I’ve tried on this navy lace confection, but I’m not sold.

In time, I’ve come round to the idea of wearing a white shirt with a maxi skirt ala Emma Watson at the recent Ralph Lauren Gala, or with a sequin mini. It’s a timeless, classic red carpet look that I’ve never actually seen pulled off in real life, but I think I’m going to give it a damn good try.
